Aug. 4th - Viner Sound

This morning we woke up to a marine layer of fog & 60'. Breakfast was corned beef hash & an egg for each of us. I buy the hash from Market House Meats in Seattle where I have been buying our corned beef for years. They make up packages with their corned beef, potatoes, peppers & onions - it's delicious. I bought 4 packs for the boat & freeze them - this is the 2nd one we've had. The tide is going out so we'll see if there are any bear sightings!
Last night the sea gulls gathered on 2 rocks near the shore & rested there until about 9:00 when they all flew away. Not sure where they went but they're flying around this morning. Sun came out around 11:30 & dinghy went down.
Rearranged the food in the freezer this morning so the things I wanted on the top shelf for when Jan is here are there. We've definitely made a dent in the freezer food (more than I thought) as it was stuffed full on both levels when we left Shelter Bay. Yesterday I dumped quite a bit of vegies from the frig - they just don't last that long. Hopefully I'll find some more up here at either Pierre's or Sullivan Bay. Those are the only stores in the Broughtons unless you go to the "big" city (Pt. McNeil).
We went for our dinghy ride to check out this area. We are on the north side (there are 2 anchor buoys & 2 of us here) which is very protected. There are 2 buoys on the south side & you definitely feel the wind there more (no boats there). When we got back, I headed to the Lido deck to read. Once again it's really warm up there even though it is only 72' out at 4:00.
A group of about 20 small dolphins came into the bay outside of our moorage around 4:00, we assume chasing & feeding on fish. They just kept going back & forth for about 3 hours & 2 bald eagles were following them around. Very cool afternoon entertainment from the boat!!! Unfortunately they are far enough away that pictures don't turn out. We are on the perfect mooring buoy to watch all of this. The other boat that is here is further inside the bay & could only watch when the dolphins came into our bay. We've also seen ravens & a black duck with a red collar - not sure what he is.
Well, I spoke too soon! When Rod & I decided to head to the flybridge for cocktails, the dolphins came into our bay & put on quite a show, close to the boat! Added to that, one of the eagles came back to sit on a tree near to us. When he went to leave, he had a long tail of moss from the tree he was on attached to his claw. He tried to shake it off, but couldn't & ended up going across the bay & landing on a very low limb of a tree. Didn't see him after that but assume he got it off.
Tonight's dinner is salmon that we brought from Shelter Bay. One of our friends, Claus Dassel, procured it for us from a Native American who was working on his house & also fished. We're having that with a rice mix.
