Aug. 16th - Near Scobel Island (Desolation Sound)

Left Blind Channel a little before 8:00 to time several more rapid (Yucatas & Gillard Passage) - it was 58' & cloudy. When we were about an hour away there were many boats (at least 20, all slowing down in order not to hit the major rapids before slack) going in our direction. It made getting through a little more complicated as Rod couldn't be exactly where he would have liked but eventually everyone lined up to get through.
We arrived at 1:00 in Desolation & got a call on the radio from John Kipper saying that he & Harv were behind us & we should wait for them to raft up & then join them. Turned out that while we were gone the Park Service came in & told them they had to leave Scobel Island because you are not supposed to stay more than 14 days in a row in a park area. Now, they have been here every summer for almost 3 months for many years & have never been told they needed to leave before. So, they gave their spot to an SYC member who also rafts & spends a lot of time here. They then went to a couple different places & were just coming back when they saw us. So, now we are rafted with John & Lois not too far from where the old raft was. Harv didn't like the spot John picked so he is not too far from us with another Canadian boat that joins their raft too. Darryl & Glennis were there when we were here earlier this year & live in Powell River.
After we got rafted up, we visited with John & Lois on their boat, hearing about their adventures & filling them in our time in the Broughtons. I showed Lois some of the pictures from our blog - picking some of the highlights.
We all went to Harv's boat for dinner - we had crab, prawn & sausage skewers & goat cheese with a pickled plum sauce for appies and cod, green salad, apple salad & spicy green beans for dinner. On our way back to our boats, we heard someone call my name. It was my friend, Robin Gainey, who spends the summer up here writing books. Last year we had cocktails on her boat when our friends Aya & Drew were visiting us. I met Robin when I was on the ballet board. She single hands her boat & family & friends fly in & out. Her husband is still working so he flys in & out too.
It was very warm here today so the sun/bug screens went back on the windows. I forgot to check the temperature but I'm sure it was in the high 70's.

  1. Lynn, so funny as I was just thinking about if you had come across Robin this summer or not. I remember that wonderful early evening on her boat. Hope you've had a great summer. I gather you will be back by labor day. xo, AH
