The last leg of our trip back to Shelter Bay

Patches of fog on our way back to La Conner

Aug. 27th - Home!!!

Well, I wasn't planning on blogging today but... It was almost 66 when I got up about 7:00 this morning & another sunny day.
Mr. Cat decided to wake us up at 5:00 this morning. After listening to him meowing forever, Rod finally got up. He usually feeds him at 6:00 & thought he was out of food because he does let us know if he has an empty bowl. That was not the case today...he did have food so he was NOT in our/Rod's good graces. I always try to go back to sleep but once Rod is up he's up.
Then as I was sitting in the salon having my first cup of coffee, we heard the swallows chirping. They started flying by the windows & our poor, old, arthritic kitty was standing on his hind legs with paws on the window trying to watch them. He was chattering & I'm sure he was thinking he was going to catch & eat one!!! That all lasted about 5 min. It was quite entertaining. Then, of course, he needed to take a nap to recover.
We left Henry at 7:45. It's usually about 5-1/2 hours to home. When we got to Rosario Straits, it was very foggy. The Captain put on the radar, but the biggest problem was that we were also going into the sun, so he couldn't see his navagational screens. Those were adjusted so they were turned sideways & that did the trick. When we got into the fog, it was actually above the water which made it much easier to see things on the water, boats included. There was quite a bit of ferry action before we got into the straits so the Captain was also adjusting our position to get out of their way! For awhile the fog lifted, but then we were in it again, with the fog horn on as well. We could only see the water right around the boat but the radar alerted the Captain about other boats coming towards us. We were out of the fog by 10:00 & had a beautiful view of Mt. Baker. Winds got up to 20 knots, but did not affect us.
As we were approaching the La Conner channel, there were many seals sunning on the sand bars on one side & birds, herons, sea gulls, etc. on the other side. I am sure they were all there to welcome us home.
We arrived home at 12:30. I managed to get on the dock from our swim step, as Finch's boat is getting some work done on it. That gave us the whole dock to maneuver in, which was great! Tide was out & our ramp is very steep going up so I decided to have lunch on the boat & start taking things off the boat once the tide comes in. That might include Mr. C. It's been a super summer!!!

Aug. 26th - SYC Henry Island

Woke up this morning to another beautiful day! We went over to Roche Harbor by dinghy for lunch (cod fish & chips) & looked at the stores (3) while we were there. After we got back, Rod got a call from Dale Henley who invited us over to their house for drinks & appetizers at 4:30. 2 other couples at the outstation are going as well.
Until then, I did some reading up on the flybridge. It got up to 78' today - a gorgeous day for our last stop for the summer!!! Tomorrow we are heading back to Shelter Bay.
We had a great time at Dale & Nancy's. Rod knew both of the other couples. We had a variety of cheeses, smoked salmon, guacamole & wine. They have such a beautiful property - they have 26 acres & much of it is beautiful gardens that Nancy has planted over the years. I got to ride in Dale's John Deere Gator from the dock to their house as my limp is getting worse. Everyone else walked up & took a tour with Nancy. It was still 73 when we got back around 7:30.
The outstation was full both yesterday & today, even though boats came & went. The caretaker came down & asked us & other boats to put fenders out in case anyone else came in & wanted to raft. We did before we left but no one ended up coming in after we left to go to Dale's.
It's been a great boating summer - sad to see it end. But...we have one more trip with the Shelter Bay Yacht Club to Sucia in 2 weeks to look forward to.

Aug. 25th - SYC Henry Island (by Roche Harbor)

We woke up this morning to fog that burned off by 7:30 - another beautiful day! It was in the high 50's & as soon as the fog burned off it shot into the 70's. It was 75 at 8:30!
Rod called Customs to clear through the US border with our Nexus cards, from the marina. That is such a great way to cross both the Canadian & US borders. Not to mention the fact that we can use it at most airports now & to go through customs when travelling abroad.
We left the marina at 9:00 - there was a sail boat behind us that left around 7:30 & we needed that extra room to get off the dock as we couldn't go forward. Another GB tried to come in as soon as that boat left but decided to tie to a buoy until we left. Good decision as it would have been almost impossible for us to leave with them there. They came into the dock as soon as we left. It was a Canadian boat with palm trees on the flybridge, hanging pots everywhere & a lot of seaweed hanging from their anchor. Rod took some pictures, hopefully they turned out as he was looking into the sun.
Our next door neighbors in Shelter Bay (Nancy Graham & Dale Henley) have a beautiful place on Henry Island where the SYC outstation is. I emailed Nancy yesterday & they are both there so we hope to see them. We got to see their place when Heather & the granddaughters were here in June when we went to Henry for a short boat trip during the week they were here.
Arrived at 11:00 & it was 72'. The outstation was full by evening.
Nancy & Dale came over for happy hour (which turned into our dinner). It was a beautiful evening & we sat up on the flybridge. We had crab that they brought (& caught), brie cheese with a fig jam on top, artichoke antipasto, a tomato brushetta, salmon candy & a red pinot noir wine that Dale brought (he & Rod drank that) & white wine.

Aug. 24th - Otter Bay Marina

This morning we woke up to a beautiful day - 62 at 7:30. Rod made our corned beef hash from Market House Meats with eggs for breakfast.
We left Ganges at 10:45, heading for Otter Bay. We've never stopped there & heard good things about it. It sounds like a great stop for the grandkids so we'll check it out. Our Shelter Bay Yacht Club has gone there on some of their cruises which we always miss because we head north for the summer.
We arrived at noon & it was 71 degrees. We walked around & think this is a fun place. There are many places to sit & look out at the bay. They have 2 pools - one for families & 1 for adults, a little playground & small restaurant & grocery store.
We're docked on the outside of the marina so the Lido deck will be our first choice for seating!
Sat up on the flybridge reading - forgot to check the temperature but think it was mid- high 70's. Rod came up just before happy hour to do cross word puzzles.
Happy hour was Jon's smoked salmon, cream cheese & capers with pinot grigio for me & scotch for Rod. We heard people talking about whales & saw 3 orcas with the binoculars from our flybridge. Most people had to go to a great viewing area at the marina (with cocktails, cameras, binocular & dogs), by our boat. There are several ferries going by during the day & one was waiting while the whales were going by...maybe they have rules about that. We saw a whale watching boat stopping to watch the whales too.
Dinner was barbequed chicken & jasmine rice. We definitely enjoyed being here.

Aug. 23rd - Ganges

This morning we went to the farmers market at 9:00 & met up with Jan & her sister. It was sunny & around 66. It got up to about 75 today.
We walked around the market - bought a selection of cheeses & a couple of sauces made by a vendor who is writing a cook book. Then we went to the grocery store to buy a few things to get us through the rest of the boat trip. Came back & Rod washed windows & I vacuumed & cleaned up the cat room. Chardonnay has become the messiest eater ever...do you think it's an old age thing??? We think in cat years that he's in his 80's altho he's about 16 in people years.
Jan & her sister came by for bloody marys (Rod makes the best!!!) & we visited until they left about 1:30. Tonight they are going to Hastings House for dinner & we are going to House Piccalo. We go there every year - it's in a small house & we love their food. I spent some time up on the flybridge this afternoon, reading & napping. Rod walked the docks & visited with various boaters.
Our dinner was delicious, as usual. I had gravlax for an appetizer & sable fish for dinner. Rod had capaccio & a beef fillet with a 4 pepper sauce. We shared their homemade vanilla ice cream with chocolate truffle sauce...yum!!!

Aug. 22nd - Ganges

It was partially cloudy this morning but looks like it will burn off soon as you can see the sun trying to break through. It was 66 at 9:00.
We love Ganges (well, maybe me more than the Captain). They have a great marine store with all kinds of things like household & clothing (Mouats), great little stores, a nice grocery store, liquor store, fish market with local fish brought in by the fishermen, galleries & restaurants. Also a good place to do some walking as our marina is a little ways from the village. The other thing we love is the Saturday Farmers Market. They always have great vegetables, cheeses, spices, breads, jewelry & art. I am sure the marina will fill up today with people wanting to go to the market.
We walked into Ganges this morning to go to Mouats, had lunch & then stopped at a spa that had been recommended for a pedicure - made an appt. for 2pm. When I went back for my appointment, another woman came in towards the end of my time & asked if I was Lynn Ries. Turned out that we had worked together at Peoples Bank - her name is Priscella Crutcher. She recognized my voice first & then me. Talk about small world!!! She's a boater too & belongs to the Seattle Yacht Club also. Turns out she was at the Pender Harbor outstation when we were just there & came down to Ganges the day before we did. I would never have recognized her so I'm glad she said something. Their boat is not far from where we are docked. I stayed for awhile catching up with her & will definitely look out for her next year.
It got up to 74 today. We went to our friend Jan's for dinner tonight. She is here with her sister from Arizona. They are staying in a great apartment that overlooks all of the marinas here. Our dinner was a variety of cheeses from the places they visited today on their drive around the island looking at artist studios. We also had smoked salmon, veggies & fruits that they found at stands along the way. We walked back to the boat around 9:30 with the help of our flashlight.
Tomorrow we'll meet them at the farmers market around 9:00 & after we're done, they'll come over to the boat for Rod's "famous bloody marys."

Aug. 21st - Ganges Marina

We left at 8:30 this morning with blue skies & 61'. Once we got to the Straits of Georgia, we hobby-horsed the whole way across (3 hrs.). Winds got up to 15 knots which normally would be fine. Neither Chardonnay nor I enjoyed the ride although I didn't need my wrist bands for this trip. Mr. Cat had trouble getting comfortable although he was making several trips up & down the stairs to his food & litter box. Turned out he threw up down there which Rod noticed. But...I had no interest in cleaning it up until the hobby-horsing stopped! Eventually he made it down to our stateroom & spent the rest of that stretch in his condo/kennel. When he resurfaced & tried heading to his food, I had Rod block him & I went down to clean it up so he didn't step in it & get it all over the floor & himself. The things we do for our animals!
As soon as we got through the straits & a set of rapids, we thought the wind would die down, but instead it picked up to 20 knots & water was crashing over the whole bow of the boat. The only good thing (has to be a good thing, right?) was that we weren't hobby-horsing anymore. It was about a 2 hour trip to Ganges from that point. We arrived at 4:20 pm.
Once we settled in, Rod washed the boat off so the salt didn't dry on it. Tomorrow he'll do the windows. I connected with our friend Jan Harper (who was in the Broughtons with us). She's here with her sister (they drove here) - we're going over to the apartment they're renting for dinner tomorrow, They've been here since Tuesday & are exploring all of the artist studios & food places on the island. They've been buying an assortment of cheeses, fish, etc so it will be a fun tasting!
Tonight a moma swan & 4 babies came around & we fed them some bread & Rod took pictures. There's been a family like that here almost every year since we've benn coming. Dinner was leftovers. Since we had a long ride getting here, neither of us felt like going out to eat.

Aug. 20th - Pender SYC outstation

Most of the boats at the outstation left this morning - some going north, some south - there were 2 of us left here. This afternoon a 132 ft. boat came in (not normally allowed on the outstation docks because they're too big & can hurt the docks) - we saw 4 crew when they came in, 3 guys & 1 girl). We'll see if we spot any others. 2 others came in during the day so there were 5 boats here tonight.
Tonight we had dinner on Jon & Lois's boat with Harv & Maggie. Were supposed to have salmon but they are tired of salmon (such a problem to have!) so we had hamburgers, baked beans, fries, salad & a wonderful blackberry crisp. Lois picked the berries this morning & Harv brought over ice cream to have with it.
We're leaving at 8:30 tomorrow to go to Ganges on Saltspring Island. We'll cross the Georgia Straits & should get to Ganges in 7-1/2 hrs.

Aug. 19th - Pender Harbour (Garden Bay) SYC Outstation

It was 64 at 6:30 this morning. Took the sunscreens down last night & Rod disconnected our electrical cords from Jon's boat & removed the I-5 ramp between our boats this morning. We left at 7:15 - Harv was in front of us & Jon was pulling anchor when we left. They are both towing their fishing boats & Jon tows his dinghy as well.
Arrived at Pender at 1:00pm, the wind got up to 15 knots on the way here. This was the first time this summer, I've used my sea wrist bands as I was feeling a little nausea even though the waters were not that choppy. It was 70' & cloudy when we arrived but the clouds burned off & it was 79' at 5:00.
Jon & Harv got here about 3:00 - Jon & Lois are at the Pub dock & Harv & Maggie are at Royal
Van. We took our dinghy over to Kippers right after they came in & visited with them.
The outstation filled up this evening - it was fairly empty when we arrived but now it's almost full. One of the boats that came in was Top Gun. Stan is a friend who gets his boat ready every year at a neighbor's in Shelter Bay. He's had a lot of trouble with his "new" boat this summer - generator isn't working & one of his engines wasn't working on the way down from Cortez so everyone was waiting to help him get on the dock.
Rod went to the Pub for dinner with Kippers & Harv & Maggie. I didn't go as my hip/leg has really been bothering me the past couple of days & it's hard to sit for very long. Hopefully this will go away! Tomorrow night we are getting together for salmon on someone's boat.

Aug. 18th - Prideaux Haven

Woke up this morning to partly cloudy/sunny skies, 67' at 7:30. It got up to 78 today & was still 72 at 9:00pm. Most of the day we had a nice breeze so it didn't feel nearly as hot as yesterday.
One thing I don't think I've talked about is the sharing of power when we raft. Each of us has a 30A outlet that can supply another boat with power. We alternate back & forth so only one generator needs to be on at a time.
Today we played Mexican Train with Jon & Lois - didn't finish so we hope to do that in the next day or two. Both the Kippers & Harv & Maggie are going to Pender tomorrow, as are we. We'll stay at the SYC outstation, Harv will stay at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club outstation & Kippers will either anchor out or stay at one of the marinas. Sounds like the weather will not be good to cross the Georgia Straits on Wed. so we'll see when we can actually leave Pender Harbor to go to Ganges. We're hoping to be there by Friday so we can go to the Saturday market which is always fun. Also, our friend Jan, who was just on the boat with us, will be there with her sister & we're hoping to see them.
Tonight we dined with Lois & Jon again on their boat. They barbequed lamb chops & we brought a green salad & fried rice. After dinner we went with them to say goodbye to the other part of the raft. We're hoping to have dinner at the Pub with them tomorrow night. Our friends from Powell River are staying here for at least one more night.

Aug. 17th - Scobel mini raft

We left all the windows open last night. It was 66 & cloudy here at 7:00 this morning so think it will be another hot day. Forgot to mention in yesterday's post that Jon, Lois, Rod & I went for a cocktail cruise before going to Harv's boat for dinner. We checked out all the coves - Laura, Melanie & Prideaux Haven. There still are not as many boats as there used to be in August. We found lots of big ones tho.
Apparently all the boaters that come & go on Jon & Harv's raft missed Rod while we were gone. He's now known as "the fix it man" for everything that they can't take care of on their own, especially anything electrical or technology related. Nice to be needed (-:
Well, we've had quite an interesting afternoon! Lois & Jon decided that they wanted to move so the boats are not in the afternoon sun (which we were & the boats cook) & they will be here for 2 more weeks. Jon's first choice was to move right across from where we were which is a little island where kyakers used to spend the night (also no longer allowed by the park service unless there is an official outhouse). He made several attempts to anchor & then stern tie off the island but the anchor was not holding to the bottom. While he was getting set up, Rod dropped our anchor while we were waiting to raft & we didn't stick either. Finally that plan was abandoned after at least an hour of trying. Another boat came in & asked what we were doing & waited for us to get situated - Rod told him we were waiting to see what Jon decided to do. Well, we left shortly after that after failing to secure our spot. Of course that boat went right to the same spot & had no problem at all. But we just found out he had 5/8 anchor chain which would make a big difference because it's much heavier. Jon & Rod both have 3/8 chain.
We then went into Prideaux Haven, Jon successfully anchored & stern tied to the shore (so you don't swing around) & we rafted to them, but did not put an anchor down since we plan to leave on Tuesday. Our location is great - good views & nice breeze on the flybridges.
Tonight we had dinner with Jon & Lois on their flybridge. We had a Mexican night - taco salads. We contributed roasted corn & a stir fry with peppers & onions & leftover flank steak and I made margaritas. Lois made a stir fry with hamburger, olives & vegies and lettuce, chips & toppings.
We saw 2 deer on the rocks in front of our boats while dining. It got up to 78 today. And...it turns out that the first place we tried to anchor was still in the sun at 8:00 - it's a good thing we couldn't anchor there!

Aug. 16th - Near Scobel Island (Desolation Sound)

Left Blind Channel a little before 8:00 to time several more rapid (Yucatas & Gillard Passage) - it was 58' & cloudy. When we were about an hour away there were many boats (at least 20, all slowing down in order not to hit the major rapids before slack) going in our direction. It made getting through a little more complicated as Rod couldn't be exactly where he would have liked but eventually everyone lined up to get through.
We arrived at 1:00 in Desolation & got a call on the radio from John Kipper saying that he & Harv were behind us & we should wait for them to raft up & then join them. Turned out that while we were gone the Park Service came in & told them they had to leave Scobel Island because you are not supposed to stay more than 14 days in a row in a park area. Now, they have been here every summer for almost 3 months for many years & have never been told they needed to leave before. So, they gave their spot to an SYC member who also rafts & spends a lot of time here. They then went to a couple different places & were just coming back when they saw us. So, now we are rafted with John & Lois not too far from where the old raft was. Harv didn't like the spot John picked so he is not too far from us with another Canadian boat that joins their raft too. Darryl & Glennis were there when we were here earlier this year & live in Powell River.
After we got rafted up, we visited with John & Lois on their boat, hearing about their adventures & filling them in our time in the Broughtons. I showed Lois some of the pictures from our blog - picking some of the highlights.
We all went to Harv's boat for dinner - we had crab, prawn & sausage skewers & goat cheese with a pickled plum sauce for appies and cod, green salad, apple salad & spicy green beans for dinner. On our way back to our boats, we heard someone call my name. It was my friend, Robin Gainey, who spends the summer up here writing books. Last year we had cocktails on her boat when our friends Aya & Drew were visiting us. I met Robin when I was on the ballet board. She single hands her boat & family & friends fly in & out. Her husband is still working so he flys in & out too.
It was very warm here today so the sun/bug screens went back on the windows. I forgot to check the temperature but I'm sure it was in the high 70's.

Aug. 15th - Blind Channel

We left our cove about 7:30 to go through Chatham Channel rapids - we were about 30 minutes ahead of slack so we got a push through from the current which meant we went through at almost 10 kt., about 2 kt faster than we normally travel. We're hoping to get across Johnstone Straits before the winds pick up too much as they're predicted to be 10-20 knots in the afternoon. We'd like to get to Blind Channel today, but if the straits are too windy our backup plan is to go to Port Harvey Marina which is right before the straits. Good news is that there wasn't any fog when we left so hopefully that will be true for the whole trip.
Now that we're leaving the Broughtons, a few comments about the places we visited. We did not see as many boaters up here this year - more Canadians than US & more larger boats than small. The little marinas seem to be filling up most of the time but the larger ones - Sullivan Bay hasn't been that busy this year & Pierre's has been busy on meal nights but not when there is no meal. We sure hope that the marinas continue to get enough business to keep going as most of them are only open June-Sept. It seems that Lagoon Cove (really the start of the trek) has been busy but we think that's because that's where a lot of boaters wait for the weather to change in the straits.
We entered Johnstone Straits at 8:30 - 3 knots of wind, flat water - good job again Captain Rod! Lots of other boats headed out from Port Harvey - another good sign when other boaters think the timing is good. Wind got as high as 14 knots, average 10. We were through the straits by 10:00.
We hit Whirlpool Rapids at 11:15 with 6 knots against us but we would have had to wait until 2:00 for slack. We put everything in the sink or on the couch but the Captain is very experienced at manuvering the boat so we didn't have a problem - however, we did see whirlpools going through. Another boater called on the radio after we got through to see how we did & Rod gave him some tips. Arrived at Blind Channel at 1:15 & it was 62 & cloudy.
Had dinner at the restaurant - Rod had schnitzel & I had goulash - both delicious - & we shared a berry crisp with ice cream. We were sitting next to a couple from Saltsprings Island & visited across the tables. They joined us while we had our dessert & told us about a potlatch they were invited to in Alert Bay. That's now on our list to visit next year. It was starting to drizzle when we came back to the boat around 8:30.
We're docked across from another Grand Banks (the Pelican) whom we've seen before at a Grand Banks rendezvous. The owners are John & Elaine Sherba (?) & their kid went to school with Rex (Rod's son) at University Prep. Small world!

Aug. 14th - Cutter Cove

Got up this morning around 7:30 - 56' & very foggy. We even put the heat on for a few minutes to warm up the salon. Left Pierre's at 11:15 & it was 66' but still foggy although the fog is lifting so it's not down on the water any more. Well, I spoke too soon - 30 minutes into the trip the fog was back on the water & our radar was on.
Our plan was to go to Lagoon Cove Marina but once again they are full unless you are willing to raft in the front of the marina & then boats have to coordinate in the morning to get out. We want to leave early to time the series of rapids & Johnstone Straits so we are going back to Cutter Cove where we anchored on the way up. We were anchored by 2:00 & winds got up to 18 knots in the cove. It blew most of the night. There is 1 other boat which came in after us -a couple from SYC that we met at Pierre's.
Dinner was leftover halibut & flank steak with roasted corn.

Aug. 13th - Pierre's

We left Claydon at 8:00 to make sure we got to Pierre's in plenty of time for Jan's flight at 12:30. We once again had the marine layer of dense fog & Rod actually used the radar & fog horn for a short time. We got to Pierre's around 10:45.
Jan's plane was supposed to be here around 12:30 (the time is always tentative depending on weather & # of stops along the way up). The plane didn't get here until 3:00 - they apparently got a late start from Seattle due to the clouds. So, we were basically hanging around waiting for the plane for several hours. We had a wonderful time with Jan & think she brought some great weather with her.
Did a little bit of reorganizing on the boat & some laundry. Tonight we went to another fish fry & sat with a really interesting group of people - some SYC boaters & some Canadians.

Claydon Bay

Aug. 12th - Claydon Bay

This morning we left Sullivan around noon. We all took showers on the boat & then Rod made more water before we left since we had power. That way we don't have to use the generator for that. We stayed a night in Claydon last year on the way to Sullivan as it's very close & we were the only boat there. This time there are 3. There is a logging camp on the south side & we're on the north.
After lunch we went on a dinghy ride around the bay & checked things out. There is another Grand Banks here & we stopped to visit with them along the way. They told us that when they were here the last time they saw bears at low tide. That won't be until 9:30 tonight (too dark to see) & again tomorrow morning at 9:00. We're leaving at 8:00 to go back to Pierre's for Jan's flight back to Seattle so we'll be on the lookout for them as we go.
Now that we know the loud crying we heard at Jennis Marina were loons, we heard them here too. Jan was looking at the bird books & they said that loons make that loud call only when they are mating.
Tonight Jan is making us dinner on the boat. Maggie (one of our friends from the Desolation Sound raft) gave us some halibut that they caught (frozen) & she is going to make that. She's a wonderful cook so I know it will be delicious. And, it was!!! Cocktails were martinis made by the Captain (the best)! Dinner was baked cauliflower & garbonzo beans with a wonderful 2 mustard sauce, barbequed asparagus spears & a fabulous barbequed halibut grilled with lemon, capers & butter - yum, yum, yum.

Aug. 11th - Sullivan Bay Marina

We left Jennis at 8:00 this morning to get through some rapids at 8:30. It was very foggy when we left but it lifted around the time we got to Sullivan a little after 9:00. When we got here we first went to the store & got a great assortment of veggies. Rod bought some more coffee & liquor when he went to sign the boat in. You can put food on the boat bill, but not liquor or cigarettes - those you have to pay with cash or credit card, not sure why. After we brought the groceries back to the boat, Jan & I walked the docks. We checked out the boats & there are some very nice float homes here. One has a helicopter pad on the roof - the helicopter was there & Rod got pictures of it taking off this afternoon.
This afternoon we taught Jan how to play Mexican Train up on the flybridge. That meant that we actually got Rod to play with us & he won! Jan got sucked in very quickly & loved it. In fact, I believe that she actually called me the "B" word three times!!! Unfortunately I was behind most of the time & talked Jan into joining me drinking wine to drown my sorrows...I think about 1:30 as I was quite depressed. I did end up in 2nd place at least. We played 13 games, which is how many games you play to finish.
Tonight we had my marinated flank steak for dinner with rice & salad. Jan brought two great bottles of red wine with her & we had the 2nd one tonight.
I forgot to mention that a couple of nights ago we watched "The Next Three Days" with Russell Crowe, for those that are anxiously awaiting our movie critiques. It was great!
Another interesting thing that I wanted to mention, is that when we were at Jennis, we kept hearing this REALLY loud noise that sounded like a large group of birds all yelling at the same time. I asked the marina manager if she knew what they were - it was loons. They apparently hang out behind an island right in front of the marina. We kept hearing that noise, on & off, all afternoon.

Aug. 9th - Shawl Bay Marina; Aug. 10th - Jennis Bay Marina

8/9 - We left Kwatsi around 11:00 & got to Shawl about 1:00. Lunch was an assortment of leftovers & appetizers. By the evening the marina was full (forgot to count the # of boats). The weather was beautiful all day & we actually spent the trip here on the flybridge. The marina did a 5:00 happy hour & everyone brought appetizers altho this was the least exciting assortment that we've seen so far. We thought we might have to skip dinner again (like at Kwatsi) because we would be too full. Not so - so we had barbequed ribs, Jan made cole slaw out of a cabbage I had & made rice with leftover vegetables. It was great! We also had our first real martinis of the trip for our cocktails. Shawl definitely attracks a very different group of boaters - we always find it very interesting.
8/10 - This morning Jan & Rod went to Shawl's pancake breakfast at 8:00 (I'm not a pancake person) & then we left at 8:30 as we had some rapids to time. We got to Jennis about noon. We've never stopped here & came because Jan recommended we try it. There is an amazing group of pink salmon waiting to go up a stream (when there is enough water for them to make it) that were circling around each other. There were probably 100's of them & occasionally some would jump out of the water. It was amazing to watch & Rod got some great pictures.
It has been a gorgeous day, the wind picked up in the afternoon but it was nice to have it's cooling effect.
There was a happy hour at 5pm & at 6:30 it was still 78' out. This is definitely a place we will come back to. There are 9 boats here, one of which is a 1912 called the Walrunda which is 65'. There are several other 60'+ boats here, as well as another Grand Banks, whose owners we met last year. They live in Gig Harbor.
